Dadhi Mahanta (1914-1987) Late Dadhi Mahanta was not only a prominent freedom fighter, but also a pioneer for precipitating the growth of progressive ideology in Assam. He was the first General Secretary, Students’ Union of J.B College, Jorhat, which got established in 1930 and aptly deemed to be the second largest college of North-East India. After his graduation, Mahanta joined the post- graduate class in the Department of History at Calcutta University in 1941. Fortunately, he had the proud privilege to be a student of late Emeritus Professor Susobhan Chandra Sarkar of the said prestigious University. After the disastrous incident of bombing in Calcutta city by the Japanese in 1942, the Calcutta University remained closed. Mahanta stayed at Calcutta for some time and in 1943, he came back to Assam. While in Assam, he associated himself closely with the organizational strengthening of the progressive work and relentlessly worked for the betterment of the down-trodden classes. He died in a road accident on 31st January in 1987. |

Name of the Award | Introducation of Harrijan Bandhu, freedom fighter Mama Krishna Nath National Research Sarmah Award |
Donor of the Award | Durlav Chandra Mahanta, founder President, Governing Body, Cinnamara College and Senior Retired Advocate, Guwahati High Court(Letter sent on 20-11-2019) |
Harrijan Bandhu, freedom fighter Mama Krishna Nath National Research Sarmah (1887-1947) late Krishna Nath Sarmah(1887-1947) was a renowned nationalist and a social reformer of Assam. After graduating with degrees in science and law, he started a legal career in 1917. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, he joined the independence movement. Along with Tarun Ram Phukan, Nabin Chandra Bardoloi and Gopinath Bardoloi, he was one the forerunners in the Indian freedom movement that was going on in Assam. Sarmah took part in the famous Dandi March along with Gandhi. It is deserving to be noted that Mahatma Gandhi visited Jorhat in 1934 and formally opened a family Naamghar of Sarma. This Naamghar has not only been a mere community prayer hall of the Assamese people as the case may be, but also a public institution in which people of all strata can meet and discuss the problems relating to religion, ethnicity etc. on a democratic basis. It is to be noted that Sarma allowed to entry in these discussions the Harijans also. This was a new thing in the history of Vaishnavite religion in Assam and therefore it attracted the national attention. Such activities of Sarmah earned him the title ‘Harijan Bandhu’ i.e. the friend of the Harijans. This proves that Sarmah pioneereda new movement to get rid of untouchability. He wrote an autobiography entitled ‘Krishna Sarmar Diary’. It is one of the treasures of Assamese literature. |
